ONS Highlights Nursing Research on Chemotherapy Safety

Serving as RGK Inc.’s chief executive officer and president, Ruth Kostur oversees the development and release of the nutritious food firm’s products. A qualified nurse practitioner, Ruth Kostur also holds membership in the Oncology Nursing Society (ONS), an organization that provides educational materials and support to professionals in the field.

The nonprofit has highlighted research into chemotherapy safety, with new articles set to be published in the Oncology Nursing Forum. One, titled “Surface Contamination with Antineoplastic Drugs on Two Inpatient Oncology Units,” focuses on acceptable contamination levels in chemotherapy settings while also recommending personal protective equipment (PPE) best practices.

Produced by Dr. AnnMarie Walton, an assistant professor at Duke University’s School of Nursing, the article also highlights that health care workers are at risk of contamination, regardless of whether they administer the drugs.

ONS notes that this could lead to numerous toxic effects, such as nausea and hair loss, and recommends following PPE guidelines to ensure health care professionals remain healthy while treating patients undergoing chemotherapy.
